1 - INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY Val bites the straw of her drink. She stares at Amy and smiles. Amy blushes and looks down. Val looks around. VAL I hate first dates. AMY (nervous) Me too. They are sort of awkward. Val stands up in her seat. AMY What are you doing? VAL Attention, everyone. Hi. Um, I´m Val and this is Amy. Val steps onto the table and grabs Amy´s hand. Amy shakes her head. AMY (whispering) No, no! Val nods smiling and keeps pulling her up. They both stand onto the table. The waiter looks confused. WAITER (in a low voice) Y-you can´t be there... VAL Who here hates first dates? Some people raise their hand with a confused expression. VAL Yeah, well, we too think they´re terrible. So I just wanted to announce that we´re skipping the first date and that we´re officially on the second one, okay? This shitty situation is over. A few guys cheer them and applause. VAL Thank you.
She bows and smiles happily at Amy. Amy makes a quick expression of smiling with embarrassment. 2 - EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY Val and Amy walk away from the coffee shop. VAL So, what do you want to do on our second date? AMY But like, right now? VAL Yeah, why not? AMY I have a test in two days. VAL So? AMY So... I have to study. VAL You just said two days. You can study tomorrow. Amy stays silent with a doubtful expression. VAL I have an idea of what we can do. Val raises her eyebrows. Amy briefly smiles. 3 - INT. AMY´S BEDROOM - DAY CLOSE SHOT TO VAL´S FACE WHILE MUSIC PLAYS. Val smiles with a fun expression and bites her nails. AMY Do you like it? VAL Uh uh. The music stops and a commercial starts to sound.
Val is lying on the bed with her knees bend and Amy´s face is between Val´s legs. Val looks to her left smiling, where the music was coming from. Amy raises her head. AMY Yeah... I do not have Spotify Premium. Val raises her head to look at Amy and starts to laugh covering her mouth with her hands. 4 - INT. LIVING ROOM AMY´S HOUSE - AFTERNOON Val enters the room stretching her arms up. Amy comes after her. Val grabs a guitar that´s next to the window. VAL Do you play the guitar? AMY I like making covers. Val hands the guitar to Amy. VAL Here, play something. Amy takes the guitar slowly. AMY I don´t know... VAL Please? Val smiles and blinks repeatedly. Amy laughs and places the guitar on her lap. Val sits in front of her. Amy starts to touch the strings, dithering. AMY I cannot sing if you are staring at me. Val makes a fake offended expression. VAL Alright, alright. I´ll just turn around.
Val stands up and turns around. Amy starts playing and singing. Val smiles. She starts turning and dancing in front of the window. Amy stares at her, fascinated, while singing. She stops playing and slowly goes next to Val. They stare at each other, standing in front. Val gets closer to Amy. VAL (whispering) I´ll see you at school tomorrow. Val leaves the room. Amy stares at her and smiles, blushing. 5 - INT. PRINCIPAL OFFICE - DAY Val leans on the wall while eating an apple. PRINCIPAL Valentina López. VAL That´s-a me, sir. The principal looks at her very serious. He sits onto the corner of his desk. PRINCIPAL You have skipped class five times this month without any justification from your legal tutors. I´m afraid I will have to suspend you. VAL So I skip school and the punishment is forcing me to skip school? Val smiles. The principal close his eyes for a moment. PRINCIPAL Valentina, if you continue with this behavior, there will be no room for you in this institution. You will only be suspended for two days so you don´t lose many classes, but please, reconsider your attitude in that period. Val looks at the floor and then to the principal. VAL I will, sir. Thank you. She bites the apple and leaves the room.
6 - INT. SCHOOL HALL - DAY Val close the door´s office. VAL Fuck this. Val walks through the corridor. She throws the apple into a garbage can and stops in front of a class´ window. She looks through it and opens the door of the class. 7 - INT. AMY´S CLASS - DAY Amy looks at the door and opens her eyes widely. Val reaches Amy´s desk. People in the class stare at them. VAL Hey, wanna do something fun? AMY (whispering) What are you doing here? Ms. Lerner is going to be back here any minute. VAL Well, I can´t be more expelled so... AMY You are expelled? Why? VAL Look, it´s not important. What matters is that I have a couple of days off. We could go somewhere. You know, Ferris Bueller´s style. AMY Do you want me to skip school? VAL Only if you want to. Amy makes a face, doubtful. She looks at Val, who is staring at her. AMY Do you have something in mind? Val smiles.
8 - INT. WEDDING DRESSES STORE - DAY Val is wearing a white suit. She stares at herself in front of a mirror. VAL (shouting) You know, I´ve never thought of getting married, but I look like a fucking princess. Val puts a tiara on her head. She makes a pose. VAL What do you think? Amy appears on a side of the mirror wearing a wedding dress. Val stares at the mirror, then turns around. VAL (sighting) Oh my god. AMY (blushing) Do I... look nice? VAL (fascinated) You look gorgeous. Val takes a veil and puts it on Amy´s head. VAL Now we´re talking. SHOP ASSISTANT Are you buying anything? VAL We´re just taking a look. The shop assistant roles her eyes and leaves the room. Val smiles staring at Amy. 9 - EXT. STREET - DAY Val and Amy walk next to each other while eating ice cream. VAL I can´t believe you just bought a mint ice cream.
Amy smiles. AMY Why can´t you? VAL I mean, it´s the worst ice cream flavor ever. It tastes like tooth paste. Actually, it´s literally the worst foodstuff in the world. AMY (skeptical) Really? Literally the worst? VAL Yeah, I mean it. AMY And what about raisins? Val suddenly stops walking. VAL Okay, you win. Although dates are like the older brothers of raisins so I would say they have the first position of world worst foodstuffs. They continue walking. AMY So it is dates, then raisins and, last but not least, mint ice cream. VAL You´re damn right. Amy lets out a guffaw. VAL Please do not tell me you like all of those things. AMY Okay, I will not tell you. Val opens her mouth with surprise. VAL Alexa, remind me why I am dating this person right now.
AMY I do not think Alexa knows, but I do, and you were the one to ask me out. VAL I don´t recall. AMY I sure do. I had a crush on you since... I actually do not remember. Please do not think I am a stoker. VAL I don´t. But why didn´t you ask me out? AMY Well, we did not know each other. And besides, I do not even feel comfortable speaking with people I know, imagine talking to a stranger dash my crush. VAL Why don´t you feel comfortable talking to people? AMY I am just shy. And I usually get the impression that I bother everyone, so I am saying "sorry" all the time for talking to them. VAL Don´t ever apologize for socializing. Amy looks at Val, half blushing half smiling. AMY That makes sense, but it does not work like that. VAL Do you think you have social anxiety? AMY I am positive I do. And you cannot be cured from anxiety.
VAL But you can learn to overcome it. AMY I guess so. I really tried to when you talked to me, anyways. You were too important to let shyness get in between us. VAL You can´t tell how flattered I am right now. I have to say though, you look very cute when you blush. Amy blushes. Val laughs. 10 - FLASHBACK: INT. LIBRARY - DAY Val tries to reach a book from a high shelf. She looks around her and taps Amy´s shoulder. VAL Hey, can you grab that book over there for me? Val points at the book. Amy frowns. AMY I do not work here. VAL Yeah... I know. You just seem... tall enough. Amy blushes. AMY Oh. Of course. Sorry. Amy picks the book and stares at the cover. AMY Do you speak Spanish? VAL I´m from Spain. I moved here about five years ago. Haven´t you noticed my accent? AMY Now that you say it, a little bit.
VAL I´m Valentina, by the way. But everyone calls me Val. AMY I know. VAL You know? Amy opens her eyes widely. AMY Um, well, I heard it... somewhere. Val smiles. She stares at Amy raising her eyebrows. VAL Your name? AMY Amy. VAL You´re a senior, right? Amy nods. VAL Gosh, I wish I could leave school next year. I´m sick of this. AMY I wish I could stay a bit longer. VAL Why? Aren´t you tired of these morons? AMY At least I know them. There are lots of strange morons I will have to socialize with next year at college. Val laughs. Amy looks at her and smiles. VAL I like you, Amy. Would you like to grab a milkshake anytime soon? Amy stutters a "yes". Val blinks an eye to her and grabs the book.
VAL (whispering) Gracias. Val leaves. Amy smiles and jumps with excitement until someone sushes her. She pretends to look for a book with a silly smile on her face. END OF FLASHBACK 11 - EXT. STREET - DAY Amy stops in front of a mall. AMY Hey, do you mind if we go in? I wanted to look for some new headphones. VAL I´d rather not to. My step brother works there. AMY So? You do not get on well with him? VAL Let´s say he is a complete asshole, and he was mad when I realize it. We got into a fight... AMY Oh my god, did he do something to you? Like, physically? Because I will go in right now and kick his butt. VAL That´s extremely cute, but that won´t be necessary. It´s just that... I wasn´t me when I was with my family because he was there, you know? I thought I was the problem until I notice how fucking sexist he was. AMY So say that to him.
VAL What am I suppose to say? "Hey, you idiot. Did you know you´re one of the sexistest guys I´ve ever known? And, by the way, you ruined the relationship I had with my dad". AMY Well... yes. Val stares at Amy for a second, thoughtful. VAL Yeah... Val enters the mall. AMY Oh my god, she is actually doing it. Amy looks around her and goes after Val. 12 - INT. MALL TECHNOLOGY SHOP - DAY Val and Amy stand in front of the headphones shelf. Val looks between the products. AMY Is that guy? Amy points at a shop assistant who´s standing behind the cash register. VAL That´s Mark. AMY Just so you know, I think it is really brave that you are doing this. VAL Thanks. Val forces a smile. She takes a deep breath and goes to the cash register. Amy stares at her while holding a pair of headphones. MARK Well, well, well. If it isn´t my favorite step sister.
VAL Cut the drama shit, Mark. MARK What do you want? I´m busy. VAL I can see that. Val looks at the computer screen, which shows an Instagram feed. Mark closes the web page. MARK Get out of here, Val. VAL I know you think you´re always in control, but I´m not your fucking puppet. MARK Why are you here? VAL I want you to apologize. MARK Me? What for? VAL Are you serious, dude? You don´t know that I can´t go home anymore because of you? Because I told my dad you were an asshole to me and he just thought I was being "disrespectful"? MARK I did nothing wrong. VAL No, you did nothing. And that was wrong. Because in your sick backward mind your mum and I were suppose to do all the fucking housework. My aim in this world isn´t washing your damn underwear, Mark. MARK Don´t came with your feminazi bullshit to me.
VAL Are you seriously not aware that you created a civil war in my house? Mark stays quiet for a while. VAL You´re unbelievable. MARK It´s not my fault that you had too high expectations on your father. VAL What the hell are you saying? MARK Accept it, Val. Your father agreed with me in everything. You thought he was like you and when you found out he wasn´t, you took it with me. Val stares at him. Mark looks away. VAL You know, I don´t think I need your apology. Mostly because it´s not going to be sincere. But also because, in fact, I don´t need anything from someone like you. MARK What´s that suppose to mean? VAL It means that you´re not worth my time anymore. Val turns around. Amy opens her mouth widely and laughs. Val takes Amy´s hand. They both start running to the exit door. AMY (laughing) I did not bought the headphones. Mark stares at them with a serious face.
13 - INT. MALL - DAY Val and Amy walks through the mall halls. AMY I cannot believe you just did that. VAL It was pretty cool, right? AMY I am never brave enough to say things face to face. If you give me a piece of paper and a pen I can write whatever I want to whoever I want, but do not make me speak to their face. VAL What would you say to me through paper that you wouldn´t say in person? Amy shrugs her shoulders and looks to the floor. AMY I do not know. That I think you are pretty cool. That I wish I had knew you sooner. VAL Hey, you just said that to my face. Amy smiles. AMY I did, didn´t I? VAL You know, I have zero problem being honest to people. Like, for real. I could be a 100 per cent sincere with literally anyone. But I realized I don´t talk too often with me. Sometimes I think I don´t even know myself. Amy looks at her, a bit concerned. VAL Sorry, that went too real. I´m such a drama queen.
AMY You do not need to apologize. I like you opening up. Amy looks to her left. AMY Come, I have an idea. Val follows her through a corridor. Amy grabs a notebook and a pencil. They sit in front of the folders section. AMY I want you to write a letter to yourself. That way you will not have to say it to your own face. Val smiles and nods. VAL Okay, I like that. AMY What do you want you to know? VAL Um... Val frowns. Amy looks at her, then to the notebook. AMY So, uh, how do you feel about yourself? VAL Well, right now I´m a bit mad because I was spelled. And um, I know I could have done something about it, but I saw it coming and didn´t do shit. AMY And why didn´t you? VAL I don´t know. Sometimes, I´m just like that. I start not caring about things. AMY But you actually do.
VAL Of course I do. Amy, this was a two days suspension, but I could be expelled forever. And, still, I don´t give a damn. Why am I like this? AMY Maybe you are just afraid. If you start caring, things will get real. Trust me, I care too much, I know what that is like. But it is just how life goes. You cannot ignore it as if you are independent to the rest of the world. VAL Worst part of all, I´m completely aware of that. AMY Well, now you have a two days opportunity to think about it and make some changes. VAL Can I do that next to you? AMY Like you have another option. I am not that easy to get away from. Val looks to the notebook. VAL You aren´t writing anything. AMY Do you want to buy this notebook? Because you will if I start writing on it. Val laughs. 14 - INT. CLOTHES SHOP - DAY Val and Amy look through the clothes rack. VAL You would look really good in this. Val shows Amy a night dress.
AMY I-I don´t know. It is... too provocative. VAL Oh, come on. What are you, a nun? AMY No, I just... Amy shrugs. Val looks at her. VAL Whatever. It´s too expensive anyway. AMY Are you mad? Val looks at her, surprised. VAL Why would I be mad? I´m not getting paid for selling this. AMY I know but... it is just not my style. I am sorry. VAL Hey, don´t you apologize for telling the truth. You know, you apologize too often. AMY I know. Sorr- Val smiles. Amy laughs hanging her head. AMY Do you want to play "20 questions"? VAL What´s that? AMY It is sort of a game. I ask 20 questions and you answer them. Then you can ask me 20 questions. VAL That sounds like many questions.
AMY We can do 10. VAL Make them 5 and buy me lunch later. AMY Deal. Um, okay. First one. What do you think about... love? VAL That sounds like an insinuation but okay. Love... Mm... I think, loving someone is like riding a bicycle. You feel free and powerful and happy at first. But then you fall, get hurt, so you ask yourself if it was worth it. AMY Wow. That´s a harsh opinion. VAL What do you think about it? AMY That is not how this game works. VAL Then let´s make it our own game. AMY I think romantic love is not the only kind. VAL That´s not an opinion. That´s a fact. AMY What I mean is that everyone is so concerned about romantic love. Society stands that your partner should be the most important person in your life, right? But what about your mum? What about your friends? VAL What about yourself. AMY Exactly. It is like Valentine´s day. Suddenly, if you are not in a
relationship that day, you are a looser, and you should feel sad. I actually go out with my friends every February 14th, independent on if we have a partner or not. Why cannot be Valentine´s day the day of love, but every kind of love? You know,in the Nordic countries it is Valentine´s day because it is when birds mate, so you could consider also love to animals. VAL So they celebrate that birds fuck? AMY Um... well, actually they do. VAL (whispering) Why don´t I live there? Val stares off into space. Amy smiles. AMY Okay, next question. VAL Slow down, cowgirl. You own me a lunch. Val points at Amy and raises her eyebrows. 15 - EXT. BURGUER SHOP TERRACE - DAY Val eats a vegan burguer and Amy eats fries and onion rings. AMY Are you vegan? VAL No, I eat animal products. And fish sometimes. But I haven´t eaten meet in a couple of months. I wish I could do that. VAL What stops you?
AMY My will. I doubt my strength to renounce meet. I mean, some dishes I could. But I don not see myself giving up everything. VAL So stop eating what you can renounce. I used to think like you. Seriously, two years ago, I wouldn´t have ever thought about it. But now I´m realizing I don´t miss meet at all. AMY What made you change your mind? VAL Global warming, mostly. I´m starting to get scared about it. And meet industry is one of the most polluting agent. Did you know that it takes three times more water to raise a cow instead of a vegetable garden and it would feed half the people? AMY Wow. VAL I know. It´s impressive, right? AMY I´m actually more surprised about you. VAL About me? Why? AMY I did not think you could be so caring. You´re always like, "not giving a shit about anything". VAL I care about things that matter. And I feel offended, by the way. Of course I´m an activist. I´m a lesbian woman, clearly a minority. I have to defend myself.
AMY You are also foreigner. VAL Yes but I´m white. I can´t really get into racism like I´m directly affected by it. Although I´m starting to learn about it. I can´t be an activist just about the things that affect me personally. That would be incredibly selfish. AMY I is worst not being an activist at all. Like me. I am starting to notice that I may be a bit bad person. VAL You´re going to hell. AMY Says the lesbian girl. VAL I´m also an atheist. Wow, I´m really going to hell. AMY That was actually my next question. VAL Hell? AMY God. VAL This is getting intense. Shoot. Val takes one of Amy´s fries and eat it. AMY Actually, the question was if you believed in God. Since you already answered that, I guess the question now is why you do not. VAL I´m going to sound so cliché, because it´s what everyone says, but it just doesn´t make sense to me. I mean, why would a God made
people like me if he was going to also create people that is going to discriminate me based on how I am? You know, wars, morons, diseases... If God exists, I don´t want to have nothing to do with Him. AMY I get it. VAL Do you believe in God? Amy shows her wrist, where she has a bracelet with a cross. Val opens her eyes widely. VAL Really? I thought you were, like, very logical. And should I remind you that this date you´re in is a sin according to your God? AMY Correction. According to church, and some other believers. When did God say who should I love? In fact, I remember that Bible verse which says that we should love others. It does not say how or who. VAL "Ama al prójimo como a ti mismo". AMY What? VAL That´s how it is in Spanish. I went to a religious school back in Spain, in primary school. It has always surprised me how half things that believers stand are literally the opposite that Jesus used to preach. Like, for starters, what is the racism about? Especially to arabian people. Like, dudes, Jesus was born in the Middle East. Do you think he was the only white person in all the country?
AMY The sexism does not make sense either. Do you remember the verse where Jesus defends a woman who cheated on her husband? That is what I call a feminist guy. VAL "Quien esté libre de pecado que tire la primera piedra". Amy frowns. VAL I only knows it in Spanish. AMY This is officially the weirdest date ever. VAL You wouldn´t be with me if you were be having a regular conversation. Amy laughs while drinking from the straw of her soda. Val cleans her hands with a napkin. VAL Okay, do you know what we´re going to do now? AMY Surprise me. VAL We´re going to buy that beautiful dress that you claim "is not your style", which I assure you is going to be the second you see yourself in the mirror with it on. Then we´re gonna head to my place, do our make ups and go out tonight. Are you up to or what? Amy looks at Val shyly smiling. AMY Let´s do it. Val smiles.
16 - INT. FITTING ROOM - DAY Val leans on a wall next to a curtain. She checks her nails. Amy starts talking from behind the curtain. AMY Val? VAL Yes? AMY It is my style. Val smiles. VAL (to herself) Told ya´. Val bites her inferior lip. 17 - INT. BATHROOM VAL´S HOUSE - AFTERNOON Val is putting mascara on her eye lashes standing in front of a mirror. Amy is sitting on the floor looking an eyeshadow palette. AMY Wow, you have so many colors. VAL I like to do my make up when I´m bored, just for fun. Sometimes I also take some artistic pictures. Well, I try to. I have zero photography qualification. AMY I would like to see those pictures. VAL My bedroom. Desk. First drawer. Amy stands up, drop the palette on the floor and leaves the bathroom.
18 - INT. VAL´S BEDROOM - AFTERNOON Amy enters the room. She focuses on the posters hang on the walls. There´s a Sex Pistols poster, a Riverdale one, a Madonna one and a Strawberry shortcake one. Amy keeps her eyes on the last one and laughs. AMY This is what I call range. Amy opens the first drawer of the desk. There´s a bunch of Polaroid pictures. She takes them and starts looking at them one by one. Val appears in each one with a different make up and a different pose. AMY (talking loud) Hey, Val. Do you live here by yourself? VAL Yup. I´d rather living alone than in a house where I´m not welcome. Specially if it´s the same place where my fantastic step brother lives. AMY What about your mum? VAL She died of overdose years ago. That´s why we moved here. She was the Spanish part of my roots. Amy opens her eyes widely and turn her head to the door. VAL I can´t see your face right now, but I´m sure it´s a pity one so please stop. AMY Sorry. VAL Are you apologizing again? Amy smiles. She grabs one of the pictures and leaves the rest into the drewer.
19 - INT. BATHROOM VAL´S HOUSE - AFTERNOON Val is brushing her right cheek with a make up brush. Amy enters the room and shows Val the picture she´s holding. AMY Can I keep this one? Val looks at the photography. VAL That´s literally the worst I have. AMY What are you talking about? It is the only one where you are smiling. VAL And that is why is the fakest. You can take as many as you please. Amy half smiles. She sits where she was before and stares at the picture. AMY Is it a good moment for the next question? VAL No time like the present, right? AMY Right. Third question. VAL Wait a minute. It´s the fourth one. AMY No way. I just asked about love and God. VAL And veganism. AMY That was not one of these questions. VAL It feels like you´re cheating, but I´ll act like I don´t realize it. Go ahead, third question then.
AMY Do you have depression? Val stops the brushing. Amy stares at her fixedly. VAL Why do you ask that? AMY Because I think you are. VAL What are you, my therapist? AMY Nope. I just have eyes. VAL Well, test your eyesight. Those glasses don´t work anymore. AMY Do not shut me down, please. Do not push me away. VAL Like I do with everyone else? Is that what you mean? AMY Do not do it. Please. VAL I just... I don´t feel comfortable with that question. AMY You do not need to answer. No one is forcing you to. VAL Okay. Val puts some lipstick one. Amy stands up. Val sees through the mirror how Amy starts hugging her from her back. Val looks at herself in the mirror and then presses her lips looking to another direction. Val place her hand onto Amy´s. Amy smiles.
20 - INT. NIGHT CLUB - NIGHT Val raises her hand to call the attention of the bartender. Amy sits in a chair next to her. VAL Seems like we have to liven up this party, huh? AMY I think it is already too liven up. VAL Are you okay? AMY Yes, I am. It is just... there are so many people in here. VAL This is a night club. What did you expect? Amy shrugs. VAL Haven´t you ever come to one of this? AMY I came once. But I did because Geoff wanted me to. VAL Who´s Geoff? AMY Oh, right. Um, he is a boy I used to date, about a year ago. VAL So I guess the story is being repeated. AMY What story? VAL You know. You came here today because of me. You came to a place like this when you were dating that stupid guy.
AMY You do not even know him. How do you know he is stupid? VAL Because all boys are stupid. Amy smiles, shaking her head. VAL Well, is he? Amy looks at Val, funny. AMY ...Yes VAL Told ya´. A guy approaches Amy. GUY Hey, don´t we know each other? VAL (exasperate) Oh my god... Val takes a sip of her drink. AMY I do not think so. GUY I think we do. Maybe we met in heaven because... VAL Because she´s an angel, right? Yeah, well, I´m a demon so fuck off, dude. GUY I´m not talking to you, bitch. Amy hangs her head, avoiding looking at the guy´s eyes. GUY Let me buy you a drink. I ain´t taking a no for an answer.
VAL Then don´t take it. GUY What is your problem? VAL No, what´s yours. Can´t you see she´s not into you? We don´t need to bare your shit. AMY (whispering) Stop it, please. GUY What do you say, sweetheart? Your friend here is acting like an annoying whore that needs to meddle in others people conversation because she doesn´t have her own. Doesn´t surprise me. Who would wanted to talk to a crazy slut? AMY (raising her voice) I said stop. The guy get closer to Amy´s face. GUY And what if I don´t want to? Amy holds a stare. Suddenly, she grabs Val´s drink and throws the liquid to the guy´s face. Val opens her eyes widely and covers her mouth with both hands, laughing. GUY What the fuck are you doing? Val grabs Amy´s hand and pulls her to stand up, then start running towards the exit door. 21 - EXT. BUS STOP - NIGHT Amy walks in circle, biting her nails. AMY I cannot believe I just did that. Like, oh my god... How could I?
VAL It was pretty dope. AMY How can you be so calm? Val, were you in that night club? I threw your drink to some guy´s face. VAL I don´t get where´s the problem. He totally deserved. AMY He did but... VAL Listen, if you hadn´t done it, I would eventually have anyways. Amy leans on the bus shelter, and starts moving her leg nervously. AMY What is your secret? How can you be so chill all the time? VAL It´s the art of getting by, honey. That´s a movie, by the way, you should watch it I liked it. AMY Seriously, Val. I need to be like you. VAL No, you don´t. Being me is the fucking worst. You are responsible, kind... AMY Uptight, boring. VAL That´s not fair. AMY No, it is just true. VAL I´m a mess, Amy. I wish I could be like you.
AMY Why would you? You are so brave. Independent. Honest. You do not have to be afraid about anything. VAL Do you think I don´t get scared Amy, that´s all I ever do. AMY It does not seem like you do. VAL That´s because I act like I don´t care. But I do. It´s my specialty: avoiding problems. But, deep down, I know they´re still there. And I can´t do shit to solve them. So there´s always this pressure inside my chest that I have to cover by acting calm and playing it cool. AMY Really? VAL Amy, I´m fucking sixteen and I live on my own. Do you know how I´m paying my rent? My step mom sends me money without my dad knowing. And I have to live with the fear that, someday, she won´t. I have no fucking idea what I would do if that happens. You know why I skip school so often? Because I think it´s a waste of time for me. I´m so damn dumb, I always feel worthless. AMY That is totally bullshit. You are not dumb. VAL I´m not good at anything. AMY Of course you are. You are a freaking artist. It is just that this school system does not think that is the correct form of being incredible. But you are. Val wipes a tear away. Amy opens her bag and takes Val´s picture.
AMY Look at this. A worthless person is not capable of doing something like this. VAL I´m sorry. AMY For what? VAL For dragging you down here. You´re too amazing for me to make you deal with that kind of situation. We should have stayed home. AMY Hey, do not you ever apologize for socializing. Val laughs. She goes towards Amy with her arms open. The bus arrives to the bus stop covering them. When it starts again, they are gone. 22 - INT. BUS - NIGHT Val and Amy are sitting in front of each other in a four person seat. VAL So, tell me the Geoff story. AMY What story? VAL The story that you date him? AMY There is no much to say, really. We were in the same class. We used to talk sometimes, between classes. Then one day he ask me out. That is it. VAL What did you do on your first day? AMY Why are you asking about this?
VAL Can I? AMY We were to the cinema. VAL What a cliché. Amy laughs. VAL So why did you break up with him? AMY I did not. He broke up with me. VAL What a jerk. AMY Actually, yes, because the next week he asked my friend out. VAL OH MY GOD. And you still ask me why I assumed he´s stupid. AMY Worst part: my friend said yes. VAL Are you still friends with her? AMY ...Yes. I thought it was not worth it losing a friend over a boy. VAL Well, that´s a good thought. You´re too good for this world, Aims. AMY Deep down I am a bitch. VAL I bet you are. But, honestly, aren´t you mad at that guy and your friend? AMY Of course I am.
VAL So tell them. AMY I cannot just do that! VAL Why not? AMY First of all, in case you have not noticed, I am a coward. I told you I cannot say things to people´s faces. And, second of all, what is the point, anyways? VAL You´re not a fucking coward. You just stood up for yourself when a stranger was bothering you. And the point is the same as it was with my step brother: letting go. AMY I did not stood up for myself. VAL Yes, you did! AMY No, I did not. I did it for you. VAL What? AMY I threw my drink to that guy´s face... because he was bothering you. I did not want you to get in a fight. VAL That is so freaking cute. But I think, deep down, you really wanted to do it. Not for me. But for every woman that has bear idiots like him. And that includes yourself. You´re stronger than you think, Amy. Only thing you lack of, is confidence. And guess what: you can show it whenever you want to. You showed me tonight.
AMY Do you really think so? VAL I know so. Now, go home, talk to your pillow and both of you decide the exact words you´re gonna spill to that asshole next time you see him. Amy start smiling bit by bit. 23 - INTERCUT INT. VAL´S LIVING ROOM - DAY/EXT. STREET -DAY Val lays on the couch, eating a cookie and watching TV. She grabs her mobile phone and type on it. She approaches it to her ear. VAL Hey, gorgeous. Any plans for today? Second day of expulsion, here we fucking go. Amy walks on the street, with one hand grabbing the school´s bag handle that is on her back and the other hand holding her phone in front of her, wearing earphones. AMY Um... I actually... Please do not get mad, but I am going to school right now. VAL Oh. AMY I just... I do not think I should skip school twice in a row. And besides, tomorrow I have this exam and... VAL Aims, you don´t have to explain anything. I get it. School is important. And you have the right to decide what to do. AMY Are you sure? I do not want you to get upset...
VAL Don´t worry. I´m not five, honey. I can take care of myself. I´m not gonna get upset with you for being responsible. AMY Thank God. I really thought this was going to be kind of our first fight. VAL It´s eight in the morning. I don´t even know why I´m awake. I have zero intentions of starting a fight. So I guess this exam means no plans this afternoon either? AMY We could... met after class. As long as we get home early. VAL I´ll be personally in charge of getting you home extra early. Val hung up the phone and changes her expression to a serious face. She grabs the TV remote and turn off the TV. She stands up and leaves. END OF INTERCUT. 24 - INT. VAL´S BEDROOM - DAY Val enters into her room slowly with a sad face. She touches the table, opens the first drawer and look at her pictures. She keeps a lifeless gaze for a few seconds. DRAWER CLOSED WITH DECISION. A HAND GRABBING SOME CLOTHES. VAL´S HAIR WHILE SHE BRUSHES IT. Val leaves the room. 25 - INT. SCHOOL LIBRARY - DAY Amy walks through the halls holding a book between her arms. She sees Geoff with her friend studying in a table. She stares at them for a second, then get closer to the table.
GEOFF What´s up, Am? AMY Hi, Geoff. Geoff looks at her. 26 - INT. LANDING - DAY Val knocks the door. A woman opens it. She looks surprised. WOMAN Oh. Hey, sweetie. What are you doing here? VAL I´d like to have a word with my father, please. The woman looks behind her, frowning. WOMAN (lowering her voice) Is that a good idea, honey? VAL Yeah, I do. I appreciate your concern, Hillary. HILLARY Okay, I´ll get him. Hillary goes into the house. 27 - INTERCUT INT. SCHOOL LIBRARY - DAY / ENTRANCE VAL´S FAMILY HOUSE - DAY Amy stands in front of Geoff and her friend. AMY You know what, Geoff? You acted like a total ass. Geoff and her friend look at her with their eyes wide open. Val enters the house closing the door behind her. Val´s father reaches the entrance.
VAL´S FATHER Valentina. What are you doing here? VAL I´m here to finally speak the truth. Hillary stands far behind Val´s father while washing the floor, but with her eyes on Val. Amy crosses her arms. AMY´S FRIEND Are you okay, Amy? AMY Do not act so innocent, Kara. You were the same as him. Don´t you realize how bad you treated me? GEOFF Why do you come with this bullshit now, Am? AMY Don´t call me Am. Geoff looks at Kara, frowning. Val´s father crosses his arms. VAL´S FATHER What truth? What the hell are you talking about? VAL I´m talking about how Mom committed suicide because of you. Hillary stops washing the floor and looks at his husband. VAL And I´m talking about how bad you treated me. And how bad you´re treating Hillary. And what a bad father and husband you are. In fact, what a bad person. AMY It is not bullshit. Not at all. You fucking broke up with me to be with her. Amy points at Kara with her head.
KARA Since when do you swear so much, Amy? I feel like I don´t even know you. AMY Yeah, well, I felt that way about you for a long time. Specifically, since you started dating the guy I was crying for. VAL You´re such a sexist and selfish person who doesn´t give a damn about anyone but yourself. VAL´S FATHER THAT´S ENOUGH! You don´t have the right to speak to me like that. VAL Don´t I, huh? Why? Because I´m a woman? Or because deep down you know I´m right? VAL´S FATHER Because you have no idea how I am, or how I treat my wife. Your mum was a drug addict. How is that my fault? VAL Because you fucking let her be! Because you´re the reason she consumed! You were an abuser and I... I just kept telling myself you weren´t, letting you fool me so I could have a dad. But not anymore, and I´m not gonna let it happen again with her. Val points at Hillary, who has a lifeless gaze. AMY You are a shitty friend. Honestly, I don´t even know why I keep calling you that. Friends do not do that kind of thing. Kara looks at Amy with a sad face.
AMY And you are just an idiot. GEOFF Hey! Geoff opens his arms. Val´s father points at Val. VAL´S FATHER You think you have the right to meddle into my life? You said it yourself when you left: you´re not part of this family anymore. VAL I´m not part of yours. But she still is my family, and she´s the only one who cares about me. So I´m gonna protect her no matter what. Hillary, if you need a place to stay, or a new family, you know where to find me. Val opens the door and leaves. Her father looks at Hillary, frowning. She stares at the closed door. AMY Honestly, I hope you guys last, because I do not think anyone else is going to stand any of you. Amy turns around and get away from them, smiling. 28 - INT. CLASS - DAY Amy is tapping a pencil against the book. TEACHER Exercise five, page 26. Anyone wants to to do it on the board? Amy´s screen phone lights up. She checks it and there´s a text from Val that says "Pick you up from school?". Amy smiles and types "Sure" and an emoji. TEACHER Miss Hills, would you like to share where that smile comes from? Perhaps something you read in your phone which you know you´re not allowed to use?
AMY Um... no. Sorry. It is just that... the exercise is funny. I mean, who need thirty six watermelons? The class laughs. The teacher looks at her condescending. TEACHER If it is so funny I guess you wouldn´t mind solving it on the board. The teacher hands her a white chalk. Amy stands up, grabs the chalk and start writing on the board, laughing discreetly. 29 - EXT. STREET - DAY Val walks in the street while crying. She dries the tears with the back of her hand. Her mobile phone makes a noise and she checks it. Val smiles. The screen shows Amy´s message. Val sniffs and keep smiling. 30 - EXT. SCHOOL´S PLAYGROUND - DAY Val keeps her hands inside her jeans pockets. Amy appears flocking to the balcony of the second floor. She looks over the rail and smiles when she spots Val. When Val spots her, Amy waves. VAL Come down, Juliet. We still have to run away from this town or else we won´t be able to get married. AMY Romeo. Oh, Romeo. Come rescue me from this torture. Val waits for Amy to come down the stairs. She approaches her when they´re both in the playground. VAL The torture called life? AMY The torture called going to class. VAL Amy Hills hating school? I have more influencing power than I thought.
AMY It would be much funnier if we were in the same class. VAL It´s not my fault if you were born in the prehistory. AMY You are just one year younger than me! VAL (imitating a man´s voice) And besides, that´s not the way of talking about this institution. Classes are not supposed to be funny, miss Hill. You´re here to learn. AMY Oh my god, you nail principal´s way of speaking. VAL Wait to see my you impression. AMY You cannot imitate me. VAL (with Amy´s tone) You cannot imitate me. AMY I do not speak like that! VAL (in a really high-pitched voice) I do not speak like that! AMY Stop it! The both start laughing and walking to the exit door while they have a fake fight. They stop all at once when they notice the principal standing in front of both of them. PRINCIPAL I´m glad to see that you´re starting to attend to class, miss López. However, I found very curious
that your day choice to do that is
when you are suspended.
VAL I came to pick up Amy. The principal look at her raising his head. He nods and starts walking towards the building. VAL But I will attend to class tomorrow. The principal doesn´t turn around. PRINCIPAL Good. He smiles. 31 - INT. ASIAN RESTAURANT - DAY Val and Amy are sitting in front of each other at a table. Amy taps the table with her fingers. AMY Ugh, I am starving! WAITRESS Don´t worry, dear. Your meals will arrive in a minute. Amy smiles at the waitress. When she´s gone, Amy turn to Val covering her mouth and opening her eyes widely. Val laughs. AMY Oh my god, that was so embarrassing. Why didn´t you tell me she was there? VAL I didn´t know you were gonna shout as if you haven´t eaten in three days! The waitress approaches to the table with two plates. She puts them on the table. The waitress look at Amy smiling. WAITRESS Enjoy it.
AMY Thank you. Val laughs again while she picks the chopsticks. AMY Since you find this so funny, I think I know how to use my question number four. VAL I thought the question stuff was only yesterday. AMY Of course not, I am not done yet. Maybe I will ask the last question twenty years from now. VAL If I´m still alive by then, shoot me. AMY You know I will not. Since I have already made a fool of myself, what is the most embarrassing thing you have ever done? VAL I´m an embarrassment myself so it´s not an easy answer. Um... Okay, I still remember this and I guess it´s because it´s the worse. When I was six, I was at the beach with my family. AMY You lived near the beach? I am realizing, you have not told me which part of Spain are you from. VAL I used to live in Málaga, which is a city in the south of the peninsula. AMY Should I add it to my travel list? VAL It´s actually really nice, so yeah why not.
AMY Will do, then. VAL Besides, I was born there, so it´s basically a compulsory place to visit for you. Anyway, I was playing in the seashore and, when I turned around, I couldn´t find my family. But I did remember the color of our beach umbrella. When I found it, no one was there. I was so mad they left without telling me that I ate all the food kept in the lunch boxes. AMY Oh my god, I am guessing where this is going. That was not your family spot, was it? VAL Nope, it was not. So when my mum found me eating some family sandwiches she started telling me to stop while dragging me out of their towel. AMY Did the family see you? VAL Yup, just when my mum thought we were safe in our spot, she told my dad what happened. Casually one of the kids of the family I stole the food from was behind us hearing all the conversation, so he told his family when they found their lunch boxes empties. AMY I am feeling so bad for six-year-old you right now. VAL I got a reprimand from the family, from my mum and myself. It was pretty weird because everyone at the beach was staring at us while some crazy woman screamed at a little girl with an empty lunch box in her hand.
Amy laughs. VAL Hey, don´t laugh! That´s a trauma I have, you know. AMY And what is the best can you do about traumas but laugh? Val looks at her, impressed, and starts laughing too. The waitress serve a cheese cake for both of them. Val and Amy start eating sharing it. VAL I´m awful, didn´t ask. How was your day? AMY It was... pretty bizarre, actually. VAL Yeah, why? AMY Um, I... stood up to Geoff and Kara. VAL For real? How so? AMY I just... I could not get my mind off what you said. I was in the library searching for a book and... they were sitting there and I just... I don´t know. VAL I´m so freaking proud of you right now. How it felt? AMY You know, I thought I would feel bad about them, and upset about breaking my friendship with Kara, but I actually felt so... powerful. Like I could do anything. VAL You can. You just have to believe you do.
AMY Remember when, at the wedding shop, you commented how you looked like a queen in that suit? Val nods while filling the spoon with another big piece of cake. AMY That moment came to my mind and I realized I did feel like a queen, too. VAL Except that you´re not a queen. You´re the queen. AMY Are you my king, then? VAL I´m your other queen. Don´t be homophobic. AMY I apologize, queen V. VAL You may be excused, queen A. Val takes her spoon to Amy´s mouth. She chews the food with her eyes closed. AMY This is so delicious. VAL Like me. Val smiles biting her lip. Amy laughs. 32 - INT. CINEMA TICKETS LINE - AFTERNOON Val and Amy stand in the tickets line while staring the billboard. AMY Uhh, there is a romantic comedy. VAL I´m not watching romantic shit. Sorry, it´s beyond me.
AMY You are such a cliché. VAL Excuse me? AMY I excuse you, but that is what you are. VAL Yeah, what am I uh? AMY You are that kind of woman that thinks she has to be always strong and powerful and emotionless. And of course, in order to break gender roles, you force yourself to like what boys like. VAL Oh my god. You can´t tell how sexist you sound right now. AMY Prove me wrong. Have you given ever a chance to something "girly"? I bet you have not. Because you always thought you should not so you wouldn´t perpetuate gender roles. VAL Okay, first of all, movies don´t have a gender. Nothing does. It´s not "girls movies" or "boys movies". It´s movies. And does it occurred to you that I may like what I watch? That maybe I don´t watch specific kinds of films just to rebel myself from society? Not everything I do is about activism, you know. AMY I am not saying you do not like those movies, of course you do. In fact, I myself enjoy watching Scorsese or Tarantino. It is not that you cannot like tough stuff, but you have automatically decided you cannot watch other things. That is cinema racism.
VAL (laughing) Cinema racism? AMY You may lose some great movies for your prejudices. Val roles her eyes. CINEMA WORKER Next! AMY But you will not anymore. VAL Aims... AMY Two tickets for "Love at first sight", please. Amy get the tickets and they get off the line. VAL I hope we´re making out the whole movie, because I definitely won´t stand classic cheesy nonsense cliché. AMY I bet you five dollars that you change your mind. VAL Deal. Amy grabs Val´s arm and go together into the cinema. 33 - EXT. TERRACE - NIGHT Val and Amy are sitting in front of each other, both of them holding a glass of wine. VAL Admit you were wrong. AMY Just because you did not fancy this movie does not mean you should detest romantic gender.
VAL Didn´t fancy? More like I wish I would have shot myself in one foot so I would had to go to the hospital instead of watching the movie. AMY You are so exaggerating right now. VAL I´m really not. AMY Come one. You cannot tell me La La Land is a bad movie. VAL That´s different. AMY How so? VAL It´s a musical. And besides, it´s not just about love. It also talks about following your dreams and how that´s more important than your partner. AMY That is not the message of the movie. VAL Of course it is. AMY Ugh, forget it. VAL Next time we´ll watch some war shit. Val takes a sip of the wine. Amy stare at her, half smiling. AMY I like it when you say ´next time´. VAL You´re not getting rid of me so easily, Hills.
AMY Is it a good moment for question number five? VAL Are we still doing that? AMY We ought to finish the game. VAL Okay, fine. Go ahead. Amy stays in silent for a few seconds, staring at the wine in her glass. AMY Are you happy? Val stops the glass in the middle way to her mouth when she hears the question. VAL No. Are you? AMY I guess so. VAL If you "guess" you´re happy, maybe you´re not. What means being happy, anyways? Can anyone be fully happy? AMY I am happy when I´m with you. VAL You can´t depend on someone else to be happy. AMY Why not? VAL What if I get run by a bus tomorrow? AMY Do not say that! VAL Why not? It´s a possibility.
AMY But I do not want to hear it. VAL And why is that? Because you depend on someone else. AMY It is not that. It is that I care about you. I... I love you. Amy blushes and looks down. Val stares at her with a serious face. VAL You know, it´s getting late. I´ll drive you home. AMY Already? VAL Didn´t you have a test tomorrow? Come on. Val stands up and offers Amy her hand to help her stand up. AMY I did not know you could drive. VAL Oh, honey. I can do anything. Amy and Val leaves the terrace. The noise of the door closing sounds. 34 - INT. VAL´S BEDROOM - NIGHT Val lays on her bed. She stares at the ceiling for a few seconds, then closes her eyes and covers them with both hands, grunting. 35 - INT. SCHOOL HALL - DAY Amy walks through the halls looking around her. Val enters the hall and Amy spots her back. AMY Hey, Val! Val opens widely her eyes and keeps walking.
AMY Val? Val stops walking and turns around while Amy approaches her. AMY Good morning! Would you like to do something this afternoon? VAL Um... Not really. Amy frowns. AMY Oh. Uh, okay. And what about tomorrow? VAL Big test on Friday, so... AMY Then we could go out at the weekend. There is this art gallery on Saturday night. I do not know if you are into art but I could teach you a few things on the way and... Val interrupts her. VAL Amy. I think I didn´t make myself clear in the first place. I don´t know what you think we are, but this dating stuff was only during my two day expulsion. Amy freezes and stares fixedly at Val. AMY I-I do not understand. VAL It´s not personal, okay? I just don´t like commitment. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Val turns around and starts walking. AMY (shouting) But. Val stops but doesn´t turn around.
AMY You said next time... VAL I didn´t mean it. Val keeps walking and starts to silently crying. Amy stares at Val´s back in the distant. 36 - INT. CLASS - DAY Amy stares at her mobile´s screen. There are a few messages in it sent to Val asking her ´what is wrong´ but with no answer. KARA Hey, Amy. Kara is sitting at the desk next to her. AMY I am not in the mood, Kara. KARA Why? What´s wrong? Amy sights. AMY Nothing. KARA Well... I just wanted to apologize. You were right, I was a bad friend. But, you know, I actually liked Geoff before you two got together. AMY What? Why did you not tell me? KARA Don´t you remember? I introduced you to him. I was trying to get him into my life somehow so he would start liking me too. But you guys started talking between classes and I noticed you was starting to have a crush on him, and he was too on you. I just... I didn´t want to ruin it.
AMY Kara... KARA I know I did wrong. And I honestly felt really bad when I agreed dating him. You guys just broke up and I... You were crying about him and I just went and... AMY It is okay, Kara. KARA No, it´s not! I acted awfully. AMY Look, I did not know you liked him. That is the only reason I got mad: I thought you started dating Geoff just because. KARA I would never hurt you just because. You don´t do that to people you care about. AMY I used to think that too... I´m truly sorry. AMY Do not be. I am happy it is all clear now. KARA Yeah, me too. And, honestly, Geoff is kind of a jerk. AMY All boys are stupid. KARA You´re damn right. I should go bisexual like you. AMY People do not "go" bisexual, Kara. They just are. And besides, girls are not a piece of cake either.
KARA Is that so, huh? AMY It is logical. We are not a gender. Each one of us is a complex individual with needs and problems. It does not depends on our gender. KARA You can´t imagine how I´ve missed you, little Einstein. AMY We have been in a fight since yesterday. I couldn´t stand even an hour. Amy smiles at her. Then checks again her mobile, still without an answer from Val. 37 - INT. SCHOOL HALL - DAY Amy waits in front of a door class. The door opens and a crowd full of teenagers starts coming out. Val goes out the last one. Val spots Amy and stops cold. AMY You owe me an explanation. VAL I don´t owe you shit. AMY How can you be so mean to me after all we have been through? VAL Amy, we dated for two days. Get over it. Val stars walking and passes next to Amy. Amy turns around and stops in front of Val. AMY No! VAL No? What you mean no?
AMY What was all the crap you said about Geoff being an idiot to me? You are acting worse right now. Val seethes. Amy gets a little bit closer to Val´s face to sees her eyes while frowning. AMY Have you been crying? VAL None of your business. AMY Val, why are you not telling me what is going on? VAL It´s call freedom of speech. Search for it! Val leaves the hall indignant. Amy looks at her, confused. 38 - INT. VAL´S BATHROOM - AFTERNOON Val sits in front of a camera. She puts several poses, all with a serious face. Val checks the pictures on the camera screen. She makes a face and frowns. She put the camera when it was and tries one pose laughing, then check the photography on the camera. VAL Shit. Val stares at the picture thoughtful, leaning on the wall. 39 - INT. SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY Amy sits at a table in front of Kara carrying a tray with a salad. KARA Hey, why didn´t you take a piece of pepperoni pizza? Wasn´t it you favorite? AMY Oh, yeah. I actually do not eat meat any longer.
KARA Really? Why? AMY Well, it has a great impact on the environment and, besides, poor animals do not have the fault of our craving. We can perfectly survive without eating any meat. Who are we to decide which species should die? KARA Wow. Now I feel bad about my pepperoni. AMY Sorry. I did not mean to... KARA Oh, honey, don´t apologize. I´m proud of you for doing such a nice thing. Is there a reason to start now? AMY (bit sarcastic) Nope. It just... occurred to me. KARA You know what? I´m not eating the pizza. AMY Um, I do not want to force you or anything... KARA You´re totally not, don´t worry. People have influence on people, that´s just life. AMY (whispering) You can bet they do. Kara smiles at Amy while throwing the piece of pizza in the trash. Amy makes a forced smile.
40 - INT. VAL´S HOUSE HALL - DAY Val opens the door of her apartment. Hillary is standing in front of her. Val opens her eyes, surprised. VAL Hillary! Hi, what are you doing here? HILLARY Is your offer about me staying here still on? VAL Yeah, of course. Did... my dad do something to you? HILLARY Oh, no. Not really. Not physically, at least. But I´ve been thinking about what you said to him. We talked and I realized I´m not allowed to give my opinion without him getting angry. VAL Yup, that´s my dad. Uh, come in, please. Val step aside and Hillary enters the house. 41 - INT. VAL´S LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON Val hands Hillary a cup of tea. She sits on the couch next to her holding her own cup of tea with both hands. VAL Are you sure you don´t want anything to eat? HILLARY No, sweetie. Tea is perfect. Hillary rubs Val´s knee. Val smiles and takes a sip of her tea. HILLARY I swear I will find a place soon, I don´t want to bother you.
VAL It would be impossible for you to bother me. And, besides, this is your apartment. I should be the one leaving. HILLARY It´s yours, honey. VAL But you´re paying for it. I´m just like a squatter. HILLARY If you´re sure about it, we could live together. I know we´re not family but... VAL I´m positive. You feel more like family to me than my actual family. You know, I think it´s a society problem. This DNA thing. Blood doesn´t make a family, love does. And I surely love you more than I love my dad. HILLARY Don´t say that... VAL Why not? It´s the truth. HILLARY Look, I know your dad isn´t perfect, but I´m sure he cares about you. VAL That doesn´t make him not a toxic person. HILLARY You know, I have to agree with you in that one. After all, that´s the reason why I left him. VAL Have you guys officially broke up? HILLARY Yes, we have. You were right. I can´t date a sexist man. I´m in the
opinion that, if someone in your life is a toxic person, you should just cut the relationship. Whatever it is. VAL I´m also in the opinion that, if you´re the toxic person, you should realize it and leave. HILLARY I hope that isn´t about you. VAL Well, I´m not exactly what people call "a good influence". HILLARY I disagree. You have been a good influence to me. VAL Yeah but that´s different, you´re an adult. You know better than I do. If I say something stupid, you´d know. HILLARY Okay, first of all, that´s not how adults work. We can be pretty stupid too. And secondly, why do you underestimate this person you are talking about? I´m sure it´s not a five year old kid. VAL How do you know I´m talking about someone in particular? Hillary gives her a condescending look. Val laughs. VAL Okay, she´s not five. She´s actually a year older than me. HILLARY What happened? VAL I don´t know. I just... I realized I may not be good for her. So I lied and told her I was not interested in commitmend.
HILLARY Don´t you think she should be the one deciding that? VAL She´s not thinking clearly. I mean, she´s very logical but, somehow, I´ve spoilt her. She told me she loved me. We´ve been dating for two days! If that´s being rational... HILLARY I see. VAL Do you think I did wrong? HILLARY I think you´re underestimating both yourself and that girl. You are a strong and powerful woman, Valentina. You can´t spoil another human being, and definitely not in a couple of days. VAL So what do you suggest? HILLARY I appreciate your effort of stepping aside if you think you´re being toxic, but I also believe that girl deserves to know the truth. What´s her name? VAL Amy. HILLARY Val and Amy, huh? It sounds good. VAL Yeah. "Vamy". Hillary smiles. Val leans her face on her hand and stares at her cup of tea.
42 - EXT. SCHOOL PLAYGROUND - DAY Amy walks through the school playground. GEOFF Hey, Am! Geoff approaches to her from behind. She turns around while taking off the earphones. GEOFF Hi. Um, I just wanted to talk to you. Have a minute? Amy checks her wrist watch. AMY Uh, sure. What is the matter? GEOFF Well, I´ve been thinking about what you said. To Kara and me at the library the other day. AMY You have? GEOFF Yeah. I just wanted to apologize. I was kind of a jerk to you back then. I´m sorry. AMY Wow. Uh, no problem. It is all good now. GEOFF Great. Sorry once again. Geoff smiles and walks to the school building. Amy stares at him, surprised. AMY Huh. Guess not all boys are stupid. Val was wrong. VAL I usually am. Amy turns around. Val stands in front of her holding her own hands.
AMY ...hi. VAL For example, I was wrong when I lied to you. AMY What are you talking about? VAL I´m sorry, Aims. Amy crosses her arms. AMY Wow. I have heard that word too many times for this early in the morning. When did you lie to me, Val? When you told me "next time"? Or when you said a looked gorgeous in the wedding dress? Which one was it, huh? VAL No, those were actually true. I lied when I said I don´t want to be in a relationship. AMY So... you want us to get back together? VAL No, it´s not that exactly. I mean that I really like you, but I don´t think you should like me. AMY What the hell are you saying? VAL See? That´s what I´m saying. You´ve never swear before going out with me. AMY I am not a child, Valentina. I can swear if I want. VAL I just think I´m a bad influence to you. And that´s the last role I want to play in your life.
AMY What are you talking about? You are not! VAL What did you get in that exam, Aims? AMY What? VAL You had an exam and I forced you to go out, although you specifically told me you couldn´t. What is your grade in that test? AMY It is... not relevant to the conversation. VAL You failed, didn´t you? AMY I do not need to be miss perfect all the time. VAL Can´t you see that if I have done that to you in two days, the consequences of us dating could get much worse for you? AMY I think that is my decision to make. VAL I don´t. Dating is a thing of two. And I know it´s not a good idea. AMY I can take care of myself. VAL I know. That´s why I know you´re going to be better off me. Val smiles and then walks to the building. Amy freezes frowning.
43 - INT. SCHOOL HALL - DAY Val runs through the hall. The principal makes a gesture showing the palm of his hand. PRINCIPAL No running inside school property, miss López. VAL (heavily breathing) I´m so sorry, sir. I´m late but I swear I just... PRINCIPAL It´s okay. Val frowns, surprised. VAL Really? PRINCIPAL I´m glad you´re here. Just try not to be late anymore. VAL Will do, sir. Val walk to her class, smiling surprised. 44 - INT. SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY Amy stirs her food with the fork, her head placed onto her hand. KARA Come on, Am. You can be sad about that girl. I know you like her but maybe it just wasn´t meant to be. AMY I do not like her. I am in love with her. That is the issue. KARA I don´t mean to be rude or anything, because I get it, really. I´ve been obsessed with a crush before. And it´s okay, it´s normal. But I think it´s time to get over her.
AMY She is not my crush, Kara. I really do love her. KARA You guys dated for two days. How can you possibly love her? Is this a Disney movie where you get married the same day you met? AMY Wow. I really thought you would understand. How naive of me. Amy stands up and takes her tray. Kara grabs her wrist. KARA Don´t go, please. I can´t lose you again. I´m trying to understand. I swear, I really am. I just don´t get how it is possible to grow a feeling as strong as yours for someone who you barely know. AMY I realize that you do not. KARA Please, don´t leave. Just explain it to me. I´ll try to be understanding. Amy stares at her friend. She sits down where she was and Kara releases her arm, smiling. AMY I do not barely know her. KARA Have you dated before? AMY No, it is not that. She caught my eye a long time ago. She was a freshman and I was sitting right here with you.
45 - FLASHBACK: INT - SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY Kara talks gesturing a lot while Amy eats her lunch paying attention to her. KARA I swear to God, I´m in love with that character. AMY You cannot be in love with someone who doesn´t exist, Kara. He is fictional. KARA That personally hurts, you know? Of course I can. VAL (shouting from the distance) What is this garbage? Kara and Amy turn their head to their left. Val is in the line to buy lunch. She is standing in front of the lunch lady pointing at the food. Some people in the line behind her are complaining. KARA What´s going on over there? AMY It seems like that girl realize how bad this is. KARA It´s the first day of school and she´s clearly a freshman. I bet she didn´t even try it. Must be a seer. Kara gasps and looks up, daydreaming. AMY Or maybe she has sense of smell. KARA (through clenched teeth) Maybe. VAL How can you be offering just junk food? Fry stuff, food rich in fat... I mean, you know what a broccoli is, right?
LUNCH LADY Kid, this is all we have. If you don´t like it, bring your own lunch. KARA And that´s the end of the argument. You know, I look up to people who rebel to the system, but got to admit: rebelling here is totally worthless. VAL I don´t think so. Val takes a tray with fried food and climbs up onto a table. Amy opens her mouth laughing and Kara looks at her opening her eyes widely. VAL We have the right to eat healthy. LUNCH LADY Get off the table, kid! VAL Not until there´s a fucking salad on the menu. This garbage don´t only makes us fat, you guys. It increases the risk of having a heart attack, diabetes, cancer, it raises up cholesterol levels. I mean, the list is infinite. And we´re in the middle of puberty: we´re still growing up. But definitely shouldn´t be eating this shit. Val troughs all the food in the tray into a trash can. LUNCH LADY I´m calling the principal! The lunch lady storms out of the cafeteria. VAL There´s not vegan or vegetarian options. There´s not gluten free options. GUY And it tastes awful!
VAL Hell yeah it does. And you know why? Because they don´t give a shit about us. It´s all about money, and this is the cheaper option. I´m telling you, we deserve better than this. I mean, it completes the feeling we all have that school is prison, right? GIRL Food in prison is better! VAL They at least have vegetables. The principal shows up through the door followed by the lunch lady. PRINCIPAL Miss López, I´m going to ask you to stop this nonsense. VAL Nonsense? Excuse me, sir. Is your students health nonsense? Is having a balanced diet nonsense? Because the foodstuff closer to be a vegetable are fried potatoes. Do you know how many calories have that? Is the main goal of this institution to promote child obesity? Because if it is, congratulations, you are very close to reach it. PRINCIPAL That´s enough. Get off the table. Val bends leaning her hands on her knees. She is face to face with the principal. VAL Make me. PRINCIPAL Do you want to get expelled? VAL No. I want a fucking salad! All the students starts applauding and cheering. The all shout "We want decent food". Val raises her fist at the rhythm of the shouting.
PRINCIPAL Everyone shut up! Enough. VAL We have rights, sir. And we´re gonna fight for them. KARA (whispering to Amy) What is going on? AMY I think we are getting soon a better lunch. Kara laughs. Amy looks at Val and smiles, impressed. END OF FLASHBACK 46 - INT. SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY Kara frowns. KARA Is she the reason why we have healthy options for lunch? I didn´t remember that. AMY I certainly do. I always have. KARA Was that the day you started crushing on her? Wow, that is a long time ago. AMY I told you. She was just so... KARA Crazy? AMY Brave. No one before had stood up to the principal the way she did. And she actually got the school to provide us decent foodstuff. KARA I get why you was impressed. Guess activists are your type. Activists and Geoff. Weird combination.
AMY Guess so. KARA So, what are you going to do? AMY Honestly? I have no idea. KARA You know what they say. Fire counteract fire. AMY I am quite sure it does not. Most likely to get burnt if you try that. KARA Not necessarily. AMY What are you thinking about? KARA I´m thinking applying activism to the activist. Amy looks at Kara, frowning and smiling, tilting her head. 47 - INT. VAL´S BEDROOM - AFTERNOON Val cleans her desk with a rag. Hillary appears and leans on the door frame. HILLARY So? VAL So...? HILLARY Did you tell Amy the truth? VAL I actually did. HILLARY I´m proud of you, you know?
VAL Yeah, well. I don´t feel the same way about myself. If you only saw that Bambi face... I felt terrible. HILLARY You did what you had to do, honey. VAL But what if I´m wrong? I´ve been complaining all my life about how society thinks love is negotiable. Like, for example,in movies or tv shows. They always goes like "insist and you´ll get it", "don´t give up on that person. If you like them be annoying, follow that person around and they eventually will like you too". Like no, that´s not real. You cannot force feelings. If someone says no, it means no. HILLARY What´s your point? VAL My point is. Am I being hypocrite if I wish Amy to insist on me? HILLARY Oh, honey. VAL It´s just that... I said no to her. Like twice. I can´t go and say "you know, changed my mind". HILLARY Remember what we said about telling the truth? VAL Yeah but Hillary this is not about truth, it´s about messing with Amy´s head. That´s exactly what I´m doing. I don´t want to be that kind of person. HILLARY Maybe you feel like you´re messing with her head because the mess is in yours.
Val sits on her chair and bites her lip. HILLARY I really think she would understand. Hillary leaves the room. Val´s leg starts moving with a nervous tick and she looks down. 48 - EXT. SCHOOL PLAYGROUND - DAY Val enters the school property. The music coming from her earphones gets silenced by some music coming from the outside. Val takes off the earphones and frowns looking up. VAL What the hell...? There are placards hanging on the balconies saying "Don´t give up on us", "You´re not a bad influence" and "Still love you". VAL Is this about me? Val looks around her, but there´s nobody. All you need is love keeps playing. 49 - INT. VAL´S CLASS - DAY Val takes a sit looking at the door. TEACHER Okay, class. Let´s do this. I know it´s early, mister Oken, but yawning before even starting the lesson is offensive for me. Page number 46 everyone. Val opens her book and searches for the page. The door opens in a sudden and All you need is love starts playing again. TEACHER What´s going on? Amy storms into the class. Kara, Geoff and a few more people stand at the back with some of the placards similar to those hanging on the balconies.
AMY I´m here to protest, sir. VAL Amy, what the fuck are you doing? We´re in the middle of a class here. AMY You interrupted one of my classes, remember? VAL When the teacher wasn´t there! TEACHER Do not worry, miss López. I´m intrigued. Continue, miss Hill. AMY Thank you, sir. VAL But sir! TEACHER For the love of God, she came with placards and music. My wife proposed to me writing the question in a pizza box. Let the girl talk. Val looks at him. He makes a face raising his eyebrows. Val sighs. VAL Fine. What´s all this about, Aims? AMY It is about relationships. Specifically ours. OKEN (laughing) Wait. Are you a lesbo? VAL Are you a moron? TEACHER Language!
VAL Sorry, sir. I thought we were asking obvious questions. Amy looks behind her. Kara shrugs. AMY Uh, anyways. Val, you cannot decide what is good for me. I appreciate it, but you are wrong. The last thing you can ever be to me is a bad influence. You taught me about health, and feminism, and taking care of the environment. Hell, you even got me to be brave. To talk about my feelings in front of a class full of people! Amy opens her arms and looks at the students in the room. VAL Amy, I get what you´re saying. And I´m happy that I was able to teach you some stuff. But I´m a mess. AMY I want to be part of that mess. Don´t you see it? VAL You shouldn´t want to. AMY There you go, telling me once again what to feel. VAL I don´t mean to do that... TEACHER Well, you are. VAL Sir! TEACHER I´m sorry, but she´s right. You can´t decide who loves you. You can only choose whether to accept that love or not to. Val looks at him, thoughtful.
AMY I want other five questions. VAL Aims... AMY Question number one. Do you think I am aware of my actions? Val looks at her, resigned. VAL Yes. AMY Number two. Do you think I am aware of your actions? VAL Guess so. AMY Number three. Do you think the image you have of yourself is affecting what you think I am able to handle? VAL ...Maybe. TEACHER (excited) Uhh, this is getting intense! Everyone in the room looks at him. TEACHER Sorry. Go on. AMY Number four. Would respect me if we dated? Val stands up. VAL Of course I would. AMY Last one.
KARA (whispering) There she goes. AMY Would you go out with me in a not first date? Val puts on a half smile. VAL I´d love to. Everyone applauds and cheers. AMY Have you got any questions for me? VAL You know, I´m more a woman of action. Amy smiles and runs towards her. CLOSE SHOT OF THEIR FACES BEING ABOUT TO KISS. WHEN THEIR LIPS ARE REALLY CLOSE, FADES TO BLACK AND CREDITS APPEARS.
